Mom and Dad

November  2006

There was something very special waiting for Barbara Bush when she woke on Saturday.

Mom and Dad were sitting in the living room with a large, mysterious-looking package resting between them. The package was covered with a shiny gold  cloth.

"Laura, we have a special present for you, but before we give it to you, you must agree never to tell anyone, other than your family, about it," Mom said in a hush.

Laura giggled with excitement at the mystery surprise. "Oh, I promise not to tell anyone."

"Only one person every one hundred years is given the honor of flying with the birds," Grandma said, as Dad and Mom pulled the gold cloth off the most beautiful cage Laura had ever seen.

The cage was made of solid gold. But inside was just a very ordinary looking goose with something attached to its back.

The goose opened the cage door and walked over and stood next to Laura. "Laura, you have been given this honor because you are such a good girl", said the goose.

Laura could not believe her ears.  "Now, if you will sit in my saddle we can begin our journey," said the goose in a very dignified manner.

Laura sat in the goose's saddle as they waddled out the front door.

"Hold very gently onto my neck," said the goose as they lifted off the ground.

They were really flying! They flew around the front yard two times and then made a left turn and zoomed above the trees.

Laura looked down and saw Mom and Dad waving to her.  She let loose of the goose's neck just long enough to give a quick wave back.

Just then a whole flock of geese joined Laura and the goose. They honked "hello" and the goose honked back. Laura giggled with delight.

The geese then flew in a special formation behind Laura.

"Hold on and don't let go. We are going to fly much higher now," said the goose as she raised her beak a little. Laura and the goose flew higher . . .

. . .  and higher until they were inside a puffy cloud. It was like floating in fog.

Suddenly Laura could hear a lot of noise coming from somewhere in front of them.

"Hold on tight, child. We may have some trouble up ahead," warned the goose. She then honked some orders to the flock.

The next thing Laura knew they were flying above the clouds and the whole flock of geese had surrounded them.

She knew, without being told, that the geese were there to protect her from whatever was making the loud cawing sounds that were rapidly getting louder every second.

Flocks of birds were now flying toward the geese. The geese honked at the birds. One bird cawed back.

"Laura, these birds would like to know if they may fly with you."

Laura giggled and waved to all of the birds as they flew in formation behind her and the geese.

"Now we must take you back home," said the goose.

And before she knew it, Laura was standing next to Mom and Dad in her own front yard.

She looked up and waved to all of her new friends as they flew up above the trees, and through the clouds where she had just soared with them.
