November 2003 - Innovations Newsletter
Happy
November. Please remember our nations veterans on
Veterans Day November 11th, 2003. I decided to reuse my story from last November for this months newsletter. I think it is very appropriate for this time of year. LET US GIVE THANKS A few days ago I was driving on Dobbins Air Force Base and witnessed a life and death drama unfolding in front of me. It was a beautiful day, early on a Saturday morning, and very peaceful. The speed limit on the base varies between 25 and 35 miles per hour. So, you’re not going very fast. I was coming down a small hill and saw in front of me about 15 large and small birds. They were proceeding, in a very orderly fashion, along a side road which intersected with the main road I was on. I slowed down and stopped about 100 yards from the birds. Other cars coming towards me didn’t slow down, they just kept coming. The birds waited patiently at the edge of the road for their turn to cross. Just as they started across the road, a car came up behind them and almost killed a few when he made a left hand turn onto my road. The birds backed off and went back to their original position . They started across again and another pair of cars appeared coming towards me. They didn’t stop or slow down either. So, back the birds went. Meanwhile, traffic is backing up behind me. The birds tried it once more and just as the lead bird was starting across the road, someone behind me whipped out and raced down the hill. He came within inches of killing three of the birds. Never slowed down, just drove right at them. Back they went again and regrouped. Another car started to go around me, but when the driver, with a car load of kids, saw the birds, he stopped and helped me block the road. Finally, our little group of birds made it across the road and proceeded to a little pond off to my left. All they needed was about 30 seconds of patience and this little drama would never have happened. Are we in such a rush that we can’t allow other living creatures the courtesy of letting them cross a road with their families? The holidays will soon be here. If you have a family make time to be with your loved ones. If you have little ones surprise them with a fun afternoon at Chuck-e-Cheese. Put on jeans and a sweat shirt. Treat everyone to pizza (I know their pizza doesn’t taste that good, but it’s the thought that counts.) Take in the shows, sing and laugh with your children. Play Whack-A-Mole (it’s great for getting out frustrations.) Go up in the tunnels and crawl around, then slide down the big tubes. But, be sure you wear knee protection!
