May 2003 - Innovations Newsletter CompetitionEvery Saturday morning I drive to Publix and do my weekly grocery shopping. I shop there because of their friendly employees and well-stocked shelves. When I enter the vegetable department, I’m greeted by name and handed my order. The girl who works there (Francia) took the trouble to learn my name and what I always purchase. She always selects the freshest packages for me. I like that! A few weeks ago, they installed a “do-it-yourself” check out line. When I arrived there were several smiling employees, encouraging shoppers to give it a try. So, I did my own packing and scanning. The next week I forgot about the do-it-yourself checkout lane and went to my regular cashier who greeted me by name. She’s always friendly and talkative. However, this time another employee came over, greeted me with enthusiasm and then helped me empty my shopping cart (there wasn’t much in it.) Then she packed my groceries and wished me a good day. I wonder if the threat of automating the check out lines is encouraging employees to even higher levels of customer service? Whatever the reason, I hope they continue the good work. One if these is a lot of short films which you can watch on your computer. I previewed a couple. They were very unusual and thought provoking. But not for the little ones. I would strongly suggest previewing them before telling your children about the site. http://home.bellsouth.net/s/s.dll?spage=cg/news/Vault_ShortFilm.htm&only=y&_lid=332&_lnm=todaysguide+shortfilm&ck=#Comedy Imagination at Work General Electric has a neat little site that lets you create drawings on a virtual whiteboard and then send them to someone. Here’s a site devoted to mom’s everywhere. http://www.holidays.net/mother/ Final Note: Last month I flew to England. I arrived on their Mother's day. The restaurants were full of parents and husbands treating their mothers and wives to a nice meal. What really upset me, when I turned on the TV in my room, was seeing a young British mother, in full battle gear, holding a rifle in front of a tank, sending a video gram back to her husband and small children. What a way to spend her special day. She sounded very proud to be serving her country, I hope she makes it home safely. C U next month. Ron Nixon RWR Innovations We Make Reading Fun Again!
